What are some good living room colors?

My living room & dining room are both connected..they're two seperate rooms but its all open and not that big ill say 11x11 each, & I want to paint them because they're just a plain boring whiteish that NEEDS to be painter, nothing too dark, I like modern, my borders are wood not white, someone PLEASE help what colors should I do what curtains could I put up? I like plain...nothing serious just a modern looking apartment..
