Is illustration a bad course choice for me?

Ive studied fine art for years and I absolutely love it as well as photography. I did a foundation in art and design this year but I found it really hard as if they were pushing me in a direction I didnt want to go in. Im now going to study visual communication: illustration, photography and graphic design in uni, only i don't think im the most imaginative of people when it comes to drawing images, more of a painter expressionist and realist. Is illustration really a good choice?
